Purchase events for cash on delivery: order placement, confirmation or delivery?

Cash on delivery involves three different moments: a customer submits an order, your team confirms it, and a courier delivers it. Choosing when Purchase happens defines a marketing signal. It does not turn every submitted order into collected revenue. There is no automatically correct choice for every store. What matters is understanding the definition, keeping it consistent during comparisons and tracking delivery, costs and settlement separately.
Map the real workflow before choosing the event
Write down the stages an order passes through, who changes each status and when that information is recorded. Your employee might confirm an order immediately or the following day, while delivery may take longer. If updates are inconsistent, a delivery-based event can reflect administrative habits rather than the actual commercial situation. A telephone confirmation is not evidence that money has been collected.
An incorrectly entered status does not become accurate because it was sent to an advertising platform. Start with a small order sample and check the dates. Do not rewrite history simply to make reports agree. A useful comparison begins with a realistic sequence your staff can explain and apply consistently, including what happens when a customer postpones or cancels.
What each timing choice means
| Timing | Meaning | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Purchase intention recorded on the website | Cancellation may happen before confirmation |
| Confirmation | Order checked through a defined process | Delivery can still fail later |
| Delivery | Recorded handover to the customer | Signal waits for a later status update |
The fastest signal is not necessarily closest to the final result. The latest signal is not automatically useful when operational updates are incomplete. Consider reliability and delay alongside volume. If you select Lead instead of Purchase, document the changed meaning and do not merge it silently with an earlier series.
What Matjri currently supports
The integration offers order events at placement, confirmation or delivery, with a separate policy for recovered abandoned orders. You can select Purchase or Lead and adjust the proportion of order value sent. That percentage changes reported value; it does not calculate net profit or delivery success. Confirmation and delivery events require a Conversions API token. You cannot assume the customer’s browser will still be open when an employee updates an order several days later.
With placement timing, browser and server versions can represent the same order using a common identifier. Product views and form interactions describe different actions; the current integration does not mirror every one of them from the server. Organize order statuses in Matjri so the selected event has a clear operational foundation rather than relying on an attractive label.
A fictional example using the same order cohort
Suppose 100 orders are placed at 55 TND each,80 are confirmed and 60 are delivered. Placement value is 5500 TND, confirmed value is 4400 TND and delivered order value is 3300 TND. With 600 TND of advertising spend, value divided by spend is approximately 9.17 at placement,7.33 at confirmation and 5.5 at delivery. These are educational calculations for the same cohort, not three profit levels or proof that an advertising campaign improved.
Product purchasing, delivery, packing, returns and other costs have not yet been deducted. The cohort also needs enough time for its orders to reach an outcome. Comparing orders submitted this morning with deliveries from last week does not establish the delivery rate of today’s campaign. Match records before drawing conclusions.
Change timing without losing the comparison
- Record the current definition and the date you began using it.
- Check how consistently order statuses are updated across a sample.
- Choose one moment appropriate to your measurement question and verify the server token when required.
- Run one identifiable operation and look for the signal at the expected stage.
- Document the change date, separate before and after periods and allow orders to mature.
Do not switch every day simply because event counts fall. Also avoid assuming that every order predating activation will be sent retrospectively. Check the activation date and integration policy instead. The person running advertisements and the employee confirming orders should understand the same definition, including how recovered abandoned orders are handled.
Keep spending decisions connected with commercial outcomes
Maintain three numbers alongside advertising reports: orders created, orders delivered and money actually collected or settled. Review the costs associated with that same group. If orders increase while refusal or return rates worsen, examine the offer, confirmation process and delivery. Renaming the conversion event cannot solve those problems. If deliveries are satisfactory but updates arrive late, investigate the reporting workflow before blaming the advertisement.
Your next step is to take ten orders and follow them to their final outcome. If you are establishing your workflow, bring products and orders together in a Matjri store, then select a definition your team can maintain daily. Consistency is more useful than copying another merchant’s setting without understanding their operation.
Frequently asked questions
Is delivery always the best option?
It represents a stage closer to the customer receiving the goods, but needs reliable updates and provides information later. Consider your measurement needs and operational process. It is not a guaranteed method of improving advertising performance.
Should Purchase be sent at placement and again at delivery?
Two conversions for the same commercial meaning can confuse reporting. Define a coherent strategy instead of artificially increasing results. The current integration retains a stable identifier per order and pixel across delivery retries.
Does the value percentage represent my margin?
No. It adjusts the transmitted amount without accounting for all costs or settlement. Calculate business results from actual revenue and related expenditure, keeping the advertising indicator as a separate description of the selected event.
